Examples of Strategic Giving
Leveraging Life Insurance
A donor designates a charity as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Upon their passing, the policy provides significant funds to the charity.
Impact:
A relatively small cost to the donor creates a substantial future benefit for the charity.
Establishing a Donor Advised Fund
A couple contributes $100,000 to a donor-advised fund during a high-income year. They claim the tax deduction immediately but disburse funds to charities over several years.
Impact:
The couple optimizes their tax benefits while maintaining flexibility to give strategically over time.
Giving a Portion of a Business (pre-sale)
A business owner donates a 10% interest in their growing company to a donor-advised fund before selling the business. This reduces their taxable income from the sale and directs profits from the gifted portion to charitable causes.
Impact:
The donation generates significant tax savings, and the proceeds from the 10% interest fund the owner’s philanthropic vision.
Giving Appreciated Stock instead of Cash
A donor owns stock purchased for $10,000 that is now worth $50,000. By donating the stock directly to a charity, the donor avoids paying capital gains taxes on the $40,000 appreciation and can deduct the full $50,000 from their taxes.
Impact:
The charity receives the full $50,000 value, and the donor saves on taxes—enabling greater giving potential.
Using IRA Distributions
A retiree over 70½ uses a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to donate $50,000 directly from their IRA to a favorite charity. This reduces their taxable income, as the donation doesn’t count as part of their Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).
Impact:
The retiree avoids taxes on the distribution, and the full amount goes to support charitable work.
