The church in the west faces many difficult challenges in our current cultural moment, and the statistics of decline should get our attention. More segments of society are becoming estranged from conventional models of church, and the likelihood of reaching them is declining as the relevance gap grows.

The fact that new approaches and new ministry models are needed has become cliche. It’s time for church and ministry leaders to foster environments for innovation. New missional experiments are needed that create pathways for ordinary Jesus-followers to make disciples among the unreached and bring church to those on the margins.

Wes Watkins is a global scholar on movements and the editor of Motus Dei: The Movement of God to Disciple the Nations. Wes serves as the Unreached Peoples Specialist for One Collective and is Assistant Professor of Missiology at the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary in Beirut.

Lola Chapman serves as Global Advancement Director for One Collective, and lives in Oxford, England where she has co-founded The Jungle--an innovative outreach center in Oxford’s under-resourced community of Cowley. There Lola has seen God’s love reach many segments of society by creating an immersive place of hospitality where God’s mercy is invading lives plagued with addiction, pain and isolation.
