Piñas de Paz
In mid-2019, we began talking with the some friends who run a nearby ministry about the possibility of merging our work in Masatepe and their work in Los Rios, in an effort to combine their team’s local expertise with our organization's operational experience and focus on long-term sustainability under local leadership. The project is a 29ac pineapple and dragonfruit farm that has off-grid cabins for hosting retreats and conferences. They have accommodations in place to host 90 people a night on-site, and the farm is fully functional. We are excited to announce that the transition from their organization to our’s is now under way. We want to respect what the previous organization built over the years, which is why we will keep the name Piñas de Paz moving forward, but we also want to acknowledge that we are entering into a new season both more broadly in Nicaragua, and more specifically at the farm.
One Collective has learned a lot through the years in our global work that can be applied to the Piñas de Paz ministry center - with this project specifically we will be bringing some of our management team from Masatepe over to help oversee an investment in the farm moving forward. Due to the distressed nature of the political and economic environment in Nicaragua post 2018, we were able to negotiate the acquisition of this property and all of its assets, including vehicles, farming assets and hosting supplies, for simply the cost of the real estate transfer tax plus any related legal fees. We anticipate the entire acquisition cost to come in just under $50,000, and the transfer of ownership is expected to be finalized by June of 2020. Like the Luke’s Inn Rehab Farm in Masatepe, our plan is to focus on the sustainability of the project in the first phase of the acquisition. The property will support 5 local staff members in 2020, and our plan is to mobilize at least 2 American staff members to live on site as well. After an initial sustainability plan has been established for the farm and ministry, we will shift our focus to an Integrated Community Transformation strategy into the community of Ticuantepe surrounding the farm.
