4 Questions to Ask When Considering Cross-Cultural Ministry

September 3rd, 2024 | Ashley Hendrickson

Has the idea of cross-cultural ministry been on your mind lately? Maybe you’ve been considering a change in your career, reading about God’s heart for the nations, or talking about serving overseas with friends. Maybe cross-cultural ministry is something you’ve been passionate about for a long time, and maybe it’s a newly budding interest. In any case, it can be hard to know how to move forward. You might feel stuck processing different opportunities, your own motivations, or even what others have said to you about serving. These questions are designed to help you discern your situation and move forward with confidence.

1. What has God given me that I can use for his purposes?

Clarity comes less from looking forward, trying to predict the future, and more from looking back, seeing how God has worked faithfully in your life. What passions and skills has he given you to use? What values, interests, and desires has he placed within you? What experiences has he brought you and how have they been forming you? Look for common threads throughout your life, career, and relationships. Do you notice any general direction in the Lord’s leading, and what specific things has God placed in your care that you can use for his kingdom?

2. How can I seek wisdom?

Guidance often comes from growing in wisdom to make God-honoring decisions. Use prayer to ask for wisdom as well as the integrity and faithfulness you need to apply it. Consider what God’s word has to say about his heart for the nations, the need for laborers, and important things to prioritize in your journey with him. Talk to wise counselors in your community and ask for their input. How have others affirmed or challenged you? Value a process of mutual discernment.

3. How can I address the barriers I am facing?

Identify challenges that could keep you from serving in cross-cultural ministry. These might include practical circumstances related to schooling, family, or health, as well as less tangible barriers like being impacted by fears and idols in your heart. What barriers can you work proactively to overcome?

4. What are my next steps?

There is an old saying, “It’s easier to steer a moving ship than one sitting in the docks.” Rather than being immobilized by indecision, the temptation to demand a sign, or overwhelming pressure to find the perfect opportunity, use wisdom to take a next step. Taking action makes room for God to move and gives you something to relate to him about. Is there a book, class, or other resource that can help you learn more about cross-cultural ministry? Is there a local or short-term service opportunity that can give you more experience and help equip you with ministry skills? Is there a relationship you can invest in to gain input and encouragement?

As you process through these questions, write down any other questions or thoughts you might have. One Collective’s serving coaches are always available to talk with you and help you think about your unique situation. Above all, remember that God’s desire is for you to be like him, not just outwardly, but inwardly. Rather than trying to make the perfect decision, make your goal becoming the kind of person who is wise, discerning, faithful, and servant-hearted in every move. Take your next steps with confidence, knowing that God will guide as you become more like him.
