APOTHECA is a social economy foundation cultivating a local ecosystem of belonging, creativity, and social transformation in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Rooted in the conviction to love your neighbor as yourself, we believe that lasting community transformation begins with people. Every person has something to offer, every community possesses valuable assets, and meaningful change happens when neighbors come together to care for one another.
Rather than creating programs that depend indefinitely on outside leadership and funding, APOTHECA connects people, resources, and opportunities to help community-rooted initiatives grow.
Our goal is simple: cultivate communities where people belong, local changemakers lead, and everyone has an opportunity to contribute to the common good.
From Investment to Ecosystem
APOTHECA began in 2021 with a bold experiment: Could investing in a struggling neighborhood business create opportunities for economic sustainability, meaningful relationships, and community transformation?
Our first investment was a 50/50 partnership with a local grocery market facing financial difficulties following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The partnership was designed to preserve a neighborhood business, strengthen relationships with local producers, and create opportunities for people experiencing economic and social vulnerability.
That initial investment helped establish a foundation for a much broader vision.
Over the following years, APOTHECA developed partnerships and initiatives connecting local agriculture, women’s empowerment, hospitality, artisan entrepreneurship, and community development.
What began as an investment in one business has evolved into an interconnected ecosystem of social initiatives.
Our Community Growth
Year 1-2 — A Horta da Avoa | Farmers Baskets that Grow Community
A Horta da Avoa connects local farmers with their neighbors through weekly baskets of fresh, seasonal produce.
By strengthening relationships between producers and consumers, the initiative supports the local economy, encourages healthy eating, and makes solidarity baskets available to families experiencing hardship.
But the vision extends beyond food distribution.
Every basket is an opportunity to cultivate community.
Year 3-4 — Voces Mulleres | A Community where Women Belong
Voces Mulleres creates opportunities for women to find connection, encouragement, and practical support through shared meals, creative workshops, and meaningful relationships.
Handmade soap production and artisan workshops have provided opportunities for women to develop skills, contribute their creativity, and explore economic possibilities.
Increasingly, women within the community are taking ownership of activities, welcoming others, and sharing their own abilities.
Our vision is not simply to create programs for women, but to support a community that women increasingly shape and lead themselves.
Year 5-6 — Sample Santiago | Tourism that Empowers Community
Sample Santiago is a socially responsible gastronomic experience connecting visitors and pilgrims with the artisans, flavors, and stories of Santiago de Compostela.
Through a self-guided culinary Camino, participants discover the city while supporting the people who give it life.
The proceeds contribute to a collective fund (like the visible fund) through which participating businesses can reinvest in initiatives that strengthen their community.
Sample Santiago demonstrates how tourism can become a catalyst for local relationships, economic opportunity, and shared responsibility in the common good.
