A brief update from the Fund Manager -

Since the Visible Fund’s inception in September of 2020, our primary focus has been on deal flow. With over 100 staff members and thousands of trusted partners living and working in oppressed communities around the world, we set out to prove that One Collective’s own networks have access to exciting growth opportunities around the globe. To put that assumption to the test, we needed to first build a model and structure around the Visible Fund that would allow us to filter through the many capital needs we are faced with as a global non-profit, while at the same time educating our staff on the inner-workings of a Fund and how to structure fundable initiatives.

We landed on a model known as Recoverable Grants, which allows us to remain true to our charitable status as an organization while still creatively recycling capital in a way that pushes our work towards true sustainability. We established a set of funding criteria that allow us to remain Impact-First in our missional focus while still being disciplined in identifying financial models that are built to last from the onset. Each initiative must demonstrate how it can stand on its own 10 years into the future while at the same time recycling 100% of the fund’s invested capital.

We acknowledge that nothing is truly sustainable without a hungry and committed leader at the helm, and therefore we have focused on sourcing opportunities where we can first identify an ambitious leader already at work catalyzing transformation in their own backyard. We will soon be establishing a Fellows program to invest in the development of these key leaders and their initiatives, in recognition that real sustainability in any endeavor requires both exceptional leadership and a solid funding model.

Lastly, as we hone in on our niche within the Impact space, we also strive to get clearer on our own domain expertise in an otherwise endless sea of opportunity. Having now vetted a few dozen deals, we are committed to moving forward with the following funding criteria:

  • We will remain true to being Impact-first in our approach, investing alongside our broader mission of Integrated Community Transformation inspired by the ways of Jesus.

  • We primarily invest in places where few Impact Funds dare to go and that are typically limited to charitable endeavors, a category we are calling Pre-Frontier communities.

  • We invest where we have a highly trusted and hungry leader already living and working in the community.

  • We invest in initiatives that can demonstrate at least 10 years of sustainability, including recycling the Visible Fund’s invested capital.

  • We leverage Catalytic Capital structures wherever possible, blending our investments with other fundings sources to increase the likelihood of success.

In this report we will highlight some of the progress of the fund in its initial 6 months of existence. On behalf of the fellows leading these initiatives and those they serve abroad, thank you for giving that gift of hope.

Sincerely,

Brandon Weidman (Fund Manager)

Our Core Purpose:

Integrated community transformation is our core purpose. It’s a strategy to realize Jesus’ claim that the Kingdom of God is here. With Jesus, we seek to model his own ministry, focusing on the needs of the whole person. We want to see people as Jesus does — responding to their spiritual and physical needs in an integrated way. We focus on people in the context of their community—regarding everyone from recognized leaders to those on the margins who seem invisible. We come alongside the community to work collaboratively toward transformation.

Our ultimate focus is to see change that reflects Jesus. We begin by ensuring that no one is invisible and everyone has access to food, freedom, and forgiveness. Access to those holistic needs opens the door for deep transformation.
